In 2018, when travelling in Switzerland, I came across a Buren Intra Matic which looked a bit curious. The case and dial looked brand new, but the case was empty. Literally empty! There was no movement inside the case, the hands and date disc were held in place with some plastic tape, so this watch was probably made as a display model or prototype. Some years passed and I happened to acquire a large box of Buren/Hamilton Intra Matic movement parts. In this box with parts was also a new old stock Buren cal. 1281 movement, brand new in the original metal storage container. After a bit of research, it turned out that this movement would be correct to the case and dial I already owned, and I decided to go for it, I completely serviced the movement and fitted it into the new old stock case. The result is to say at least an astonishingly crisp watch.
In the 1960’s, Buren developed the first micro-rotor movements. All prior automatic watches had a bulky weight fitted to the back of the movement. Buren made the rotor smaller and placed it inside the movement, so there would be no large rotor which would make the movement thicker. For years, the Intra-Matic movement remained one of the thinnest automatic movements. Hamilton later bought Buren to acquire this new technology and the company was renamed Buren/Hamilton.
The case has a very slim case profile and could easily be mistaken for a manually wound watch. The bezel has a sunburst brushed finished and the lugs are brushed too. The sides of the case are polished. The dial has a beautiful off-white colour with black Arabic numerals. This watch is so elegant yet so full of details, are you the first person who is going to wear this magnificent watch?
As written above, the watch case, crown, dial, hands were acquired separately from the movement. The case is in like-new, crisp, condition, with razor sharp edges sharp and without signs of wear. The dial has some very light damage around the edge, most noticable around between 12-1 and 7-8 o’clock. The hands are in good condition with slight oxidation. The crown is not signed but the original, rather small model which it correct for this model. The plexiglas is original and in excellent condition, without scratches or damage. The strap is a brand new high quality leather strap. The watch has been fully serviced, which means the movement has been completely dissembled and all parts have been cleaned and checked for wear. After cleaning, the movement has been assembled, lubricated and adjustments were made to ensure proper functioning and accuracy.
