This Certina Watering is nothing more and nothing less then a very nice classic dress watch. The pie pan dial with silver sunburst finishing, combined with silver stick markers and straight hands gives the watch a typically vintage appearance. The lugs have a slight inwards taper and a sleek design. Inside the case is Certina’s own caliber 28-16. This manually would movement is a true workhorse and had a very robust and reliable design and is finished to a very nice level. A simplistic dress watch, which will certainly last for years and can be worn for any occasion.
The general condition of the watch is good with signs of wear appropriate for it’s age. The case is in good condition and seems unpolished, but has signs of wear. The crown is original and signed with the Certina logo. The dial has been preserved very well, without any damage. The hands are original and in good condition, the lume has discolored to a creamy yellow. The movement has been fully serviced and is running perfectly within 10-20 second a day.
In 1888 Adolf & Alfred Kurth founded a small factory for watch parts in Grenchen, Switzerland. The two brother and their three employees worked in the family home. In 1906 the first complete watches were made. These watches were sold under the name Grana, derived from Granacus, which was latin for Grenchen. During the 1920’s the two sons of Alfred joined the family business and guided the company through the Great Depression. In 1930’s the brand name “Certina” was usedfor the first time and in 1939 the name “Certina” was registered. The name was inspired on the Latin word “Certus” which means “sure”.
