This Vacheron & Constantin ladies pendant watch was made in the beginning of the 1870’s. When Cesar Vacheron died in 1870, his son Charles renamed the company to Charles Vacheron & Cie. When he died in 1970 at the age of 25 years, the company came into possession of the two widows (“Veuve” in french), Catherine Etierinette Vacheron and Laure Vacheron Pernessin. These two ladies ran the company for the next years and kept the quailty of the watches made extermly high. Some say some of the finest watches of Vacheron & Constantin were made in this period.

The watch bears serial number No. 133817, which is engraved in both case lids. The case is solid gold, but has no gold hallmarks. The caseback is decorated with engine turning and engravings. The dial is enamal with roman numerals. The hands are gold Breguet style hands. The movement is a 8 jewel cylinder movement, and is of exceptional quality, The winding gears have wolfteeth gearing and are finished to an extremely high level. The movement is signed Veuve C. Vacheron & Cie. The watch is wound by the crown and pin-set, with the little pin next to the crown.

Condition

Generally, the watch in in really good condition for it’s age. The case has some signs of wear and some very minor dents in the case edge and caseback. The dial has some damage around the edge between 3 and 4 o’clock. The hands are original and in good condition. The crystal has been replaced with a period correct crystal. The movement is in excellent condition, keeping time within 1 minute per day. Of course, the movement is fully serviced and sold with a 1 year warranty.

Vacheron & Constantin is the oldest watch brand on earth. The brand was founded in 1755 by Jean-Marc Vacheron. In 1819 he was joined by Francois Constantin and the name was changed to Vacheron & Constantin. Vacheron & Constantin forms, together with Audemars Piguet and Patek Philipe, the Holy Trinity of watchmaking. These brands are regarded as the most prestigous manufacturers of the high quality watches. In general, watches from these brands have a very classic design and superbly finished movements.
